Meet Exchange Student Selina: Her Experience in the Netherlands and at the Lab
Selina, a 19-year-old student from Almaty, Kazakhstan, is in her third year of her Journalism study at the University of International Business. The chance to study in the Netherlands came up unexpectedly, but it immediately sparked her interest. Eager to try something new in a big city, she originally considered a tourism program in Amsterdam. However, when she realized she couldn’t switch her study path, she was directed to the Sustainable Media Lab, /International Music Industry Lab at Inholland. It turned out to be the perfect match, connecting with her passion for music, which she studied until she was fifteen.
Despite the long 12-hour journey, Selina felt right at home in the Netherlands. She was amazed by how welcoming and friendly everyone was and felt safe and comfortable from the start. Although she sometimes misses the taste of Kazakh food, she’s fully embracing her new surroundings and the excitement of discovering a new culture.
One thing Selina values most about the Lab is the open and supportive environment. The coaches are there to guide students without the usual teacher-student hierarchy. She feels treated as a professional and appreciates the chance to work on real-world projects for real partners, which gives her the opportunity to grow both individually and as part of a team. Working on group projects alongside personal assignments allows her to develop skills in both collaboration and independence.
Selina also enjoys all the extra activities at the Lab, like behind-the-scenes tours, and special workshops. Not only is she learning new skills in music, but she’s also connecting with people from around the world. Having traveled to ten countries, she feels that right now, the Netherlands is the best place for her to be.
For students considering studying abroad, Selina’s advice is simple: “Stay open to the adventure and make the most of the opportunities the Lab has to offer. See it as a step forward in your music career,” she says with a smile.
