Meet Exchange Student Luke: His Experience in Haarlem
Luke, an exchange student from Scotland, first learned about studying abroad through his university. He had the option to go to countries like Denmark, Australia, or the United States, but he chose the Netherlands. For him, it felt safer and more convenient—close to home, and with fewer cultural differences to navigate. Plus, his friends from Scotland can easily fly over to visit, which he loves.
Although he found the communication from his own university a bit unclear, Luke was very satisfied with Inholland’s communication and the way they spread information. “They sent clear emails and a checklist that made preparing for the exchange smooth and simple.” Luke said.
From the moment he arrived, Luke felt welcome in the Netherlands. He was impressed by the Dutch hospitality and the easiness of communicating in English.
Luke now lives in Haarlem, where he experiences the city as a lively and welcoming place. He is looking forward to showing it to his friends soon. He has found a room in a student flat next to Inholland and has developed a good relationship with his roommate. Luke strongly advises future exchange students to arrange their accommodation on time, as availability can be limited.
He’s also really positive about his experience with the Sustainable Media Lab. He loves working on real projects for partner companies—”it makes studying feel more meaningful and motivates me to work harder”, For Luke it’s more than just coursework; he’s helping solve real-world business problems and feels taken seriously.
Overall, Luke has found the exchange incredibly worthwhile and would highly recommend it to others. His advice? Don’t be afraid to take the leap! If you’re heading to Haarlem, you’ll find that people here are friendly and ready to help, so you’ll feel at home in no time.
