More than just a music venue
Slachthuis in Haarlem is a vibrant cultural hotspot, serving as a breeding ground for musical talent, creativity, education, and events. Open throughout the whole week, it functions as a café, rehearsal space, and creative hub. It welcomes bands of all levels, from emerging local artists to renowned acts like Chef’Special, who use the venue for rehearsals and storage.
From music stage to educational center
Twice a week, Slachthuis transforms into a lively music venue, hosting an eclectic range of events. While punk was its original focus, the venue now embraces a broader spectrum of genres, including ska, metal, reggae and many more, for a growing and diverse audience.
In addition to music, Slachthuis supports educational initiatives like the IMI Lab from Inholland and music lessons for children at Hart Music School thrive here. At its core, Slachthuis is dedicated to talent development, providing a welcoming space for artists and creators to explore, experiment, and grow.
A unique and ‘creepy’ atmosphere
Slachthuis wears its history proudly. Once an actual slaughterhouse and later a haunted house attraction, its past is reflected in the art and décor that give the venue its distinctive character. Many pieces feature dark, edgy, and ‘creepy’ themes, which add to the venue’s unique charm. Local artists regularly showcase their work here, and visitors are even invited to contribute their own ‘creepy’ art if it’s too bold to display at home.
Host or attend your own event
While Slachthuis offers a full calendar of events, it’s also available for private hire. Whether you’re planning a corporate gathering or a party, the space is often open to creative ideas. Aspiring event organizers can also take advantage of the Shout It Out initiative. This program allows young creators aged 14 to 27 to host their own event at Slachthuis, complete with guidance and a budget provided by the venue. It’s an incredible opportunity to gain hands-on experience in event management.
