During the past year, we have seen the rise of generative AI, with tools such as Chat GPT and Midjourney, being able to easily generate text or images. There are also AI applications for music creation/generation. Probably by now the most famous, and most debated example is Ghostwriter who released a song entitled “Heart on my sleeves” that featured AI generated voices of Drake and The Weeknd.
The AI was trained with the actual voices of Drake and The Weeknd. In response to the release of the song, the Universal Music Group, representing both artists started a campaign to take down this song from streaming platforms, claiming copyright infringement. In addition, for many countries it is clear that copyright can only be created and held by a human (natural music). Knowing AI isn’t going away anytime soon, we can’t ignore it. Musicians will continue to experiment with it and use it as a new part of their musical toolkit.
Therefore, Utopia has tasked the IMI lab with taking on the challenge: how do we design a framework where both AI and natural music to co-exist and be equitable?
